DistributionMexico (Distrito Federal, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Mexc. Michoacán, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Morelos, Hidalgo, Puebla).

Has been found in 4273 m elevation.

Type locality: Jalapa, Veracruz (same for neotype)

Comment 
EtymologyThe specific name is derived from the Latin name scalaris, meaning "of a ladder," probably in reference to aspects of its color pattern (LEMOS-ESPINAL & DIXON 2013).
