DistributionIndonesia (Sulawesi)

Type locality: Macassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia
Reproductionoviparous
TypesLectotype: MNHN-RA 2007.2456, adult male (formerly MNHN-RA 7212A) (SVL 227.0 mm), collected from Macassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia by Dutch naturalists, and donated to MNHN collections by Leiden Museum before 1845, designated by Vogel et al. 2016.
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): The genus Pseudorabdion Jan, 1862 is characterized by the absence of temporals, the presence of internasals and prefrontals, five or six supralabials, five infralabials, 15 dorsal scale rows at mid-body, anal undivided [from DORIA & PETRI 2010].
CommentSynonymy: Boulenger (1894: 329) synonymized torquatum with P. longiceps and this was adopted by most subsequent authors (e.g. by Leviton & Brown 1959, DAVID & VOGEL 1996), until torquatum was resurrected by VOGEL et al. 2016. However, VOGEL et al. 2016 provide no molecular details so the relationship to longiceps remains a bit unclear.

Abundance: probably very rare; only known from the two syntypes.

Similar species: P. longiceps. Both species can be distinguished only by meristic characters (see Diagnosis).

Type species: Rabdion torquatum DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854 is the type species of the genus Pseudorabdion JAN 1862.

Key: for a key to the species of Pseudorabdion see Doria & Petri 2010. For an older key to the species of Borneo see Inger & Leviton 1966 (who thus do not include torquatum and other extraterritorial species).

Original description: VOGEL et al. 2016 present an English translation of the original French description by DUMÉRIL et al. 1854.
