TypesHolotype: USNM 10403 (W.F. von Manteuffel, 1878). 
Diagnosis 
CommentClosely related to P. obsoletus. However, while P. obsoletus and P. bairdi co-occur in sympatry, hybridization between the two species does not result in gradual intergradation and gene flow (Olson 1977; Hillis 2022).

Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018). 
EtymologyNamed after Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887), American naturalist.
