DistributionNE Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (Mato Grosso), Paraguay

Type locality: Bodoquena, Mato Grosso, Brazil.
Reproductionoviparous. Females of this species may store sperm for up to 5 years and then give birth to young (PETZOLD 1982).
TypesHolotype: MZUSP 2578, adult female (given as Departamento de Zoologia, Sao Paulo); J. D. Frisch, collector. Paratypes: (6) MZUSP, UMMZ, USNM
DiagnosisDIAGNOSIS: Leptodeira pulchriceps can be distinguished from their congeners by the following com- bination of characters: (1) dorsal scales 19–21/21/13–17; (2) presubocular generally present; (3) supral- abials 8/8, (4) infralabials 9–10/9–11; (5) ventral counts in males 191–198 and 188–200 in females; (6) subcaudal counts in male 73–89 and 72–78 in females; (7) dorsum of the head varies from light brown to grayish brow, generally without spots; (8) two dark brown parallel stripes in the parietal region which run toward the occipitals; (9) two occipital stripes extend to the body and fuse with the first dorsal blotch; (10) 15–16 maxillary teeth; (11) number of dark brown dorsal blotches in males 39–47 and 38–44 in females; (12) number of dorsal blotches in tail in male 16–26 and 14–18 in females; (13) SVL 472–655 mm in males and 407–734 mm in females; and (14) tail long 23.66% of TTL in males and 21.88% of TTL in females.
Leptodeira pulchriceps differs from L. annulata, L. approximans, and L. ornata by the presence of larger dark spots in the dorsal view of the head and dark stripes in the occipital region (vs. dorsal head with small or absent dark spots and the occipital region with or without medial thin line); from L. bakeri and L. larcorum by the presence of a dark horseshoe-shaped spot in the occipital region (vs. a dark bar-shaped and dark butterfly-shaped spot in L. bakeri and L. larcorum respectively); from L. ashmeadii by the presence of one medial spine on the proximal region of hemipenis (vs. two medial spines on the proximal region of hemipenis); and from L. tarairiu sp. nov. by having a lower average of subcaudal counts in males 83 (73–89) and females 75 (72–78) (vs. a higher average of subcaudal counts in males 92 (83–107) and females average 82 (73–93)).
