Diagnosis
CommentSynonymy partly following that of CEI 1993.

HARVEY 1999 excluded Apostolepis lineata (Cope) from his key, “because it could not be characterized adequately. This species was originally represented by two syntypes; however, one of these (ANSP 11212) was discarded by E. R. Dunn who added a label "11212 rotten and discarded" to the jar containing the remaining syntype. The remaining specimen is in very bad condition; many of its scales are barely visible; all pigment on the head and most of the body is lost. Only on the tail is the original color pattern visible, albeit quite faded. The species could not be characterized beyond couplet 8 of the key, because I was unable to determine whether the snout was pointed or round in life. However, the terminal scale of A. lineata is entirely white. In the other five-lined species below couplet 8, the terminal scale is black with a white ventro-posterior blotch. The following additional observations on the syntype of A. lineata were made: subcaudals 24; 1/1 preoculars; preocular con- tacting nasal; 1/1 postoculars; temporals 0 + 0/
0 + 0; 6/6 supralabials, 5-6/5-6 contacting parietal; infralabials 1-4 contacting first chinshield, 4-5 contacting second (could be assessed on one side only); vertebral stripe narrow and restricted to dorsal 8; paravertebral stripe on dorsal 6; lateral stripe present at least on dorsals 2-4 (not known if stripe extends to dorsal 1); 5/4 subcaudals black.”
